The Centre for Migration Studies (CMS), University of Ghana, is pleased to announce that Professor Mary Boatemaa Setrana, Director of the Centre, has been appointed Permanent Visiting Professor with MOBILE.

Professor Setrana is an Associate Professor of Migration and Social Change at the University of Ghana and serves as the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa. She is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and an Advisory Board Member of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Centre of Excellence on Migration and Mobility, as well as the Centre on Forced Displacement at Boston University.

Her research focuses on migration, governance, forced displacement, gender and labour migration, return and reintegration, and climate-related (im)mobilities.

Professor Setrana has contributed significantly to migration policy development across Africa. She led the development of Botswana’s National Migration Policy, supported the revision of Ghana’s National Labour Migration Policy, and contributed to Ghana’s Diaspora Policy. At the continental level, she developed gender-responsive labour migration policy modules and participated in the evaluation of the African Union Migration Policy Framework. She has also led and co-led major international research projects funded by the European Union, UKRI, and UN agencies.

Beyond research and policy engagement, she is strongly committed to mentorship and capacity building, supporting early-career researchers and students and advancing migration scholarship, policy, and practice across Africa.

The Centre congratulates Professor Setrana on this achievement and looks forward to the continued strengthening of CMS’s international research collaborations.
