IOM Ghana has commended the Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) at the University of Ghana for 20 years of leadership in migration research, policy engagement, and capacity building.

The commendation came during the launch of CMS@20 and the International Conference on Free Movement in West Africa, held from 27 to 29 January 2026.

As part of the programme, IOM Ghana contributed to a high-level policy dialogue, presenting a technical paper on strengthening diaspora engagement and aligning policy and normative frameworks with evolving mobility realities. The presentation examined how investment, skills transfer, and remittance-driven development can enhance national and regional socio-economic outcomes.

Mrs. Fatou Diallo Ndiaye, Chief of Mission of IOM Ghana, Togo, and Benin, highlighted the central role of the diaspora in advancing development and financial inclusion. She explained how ethical labour mobility, skills circulation and inclusive, migrant-centred policy frameworks can translate diaspora potential into tangible benefits for communities and economies.

The conference also reaffirmed the ongoing collaboration between IOM Ghana and CMS, which has included joint research initiatives, capacity-building workshops, and policy-oriented projects. The partnership aims to strengthen evidence-based migration governance and position human mobility as a catalyst for development in Ghana and across West Africa.

The CMS@20 anniversary marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of the Centre’s scholarship, research impact and contributions to shaping migration policy in the region.
