Professor Mary Boatemaa Setrana, Director of the Centre for Migration Studies (CMS), University of Ghana and International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa, will deliver an online lecture at the 15th International Summer School organised by the Migration Research Center at Koç University (MiReKoc) in partnership with the Boston University Center on Forced Displacement (BU CFD).
The Summer School, themed “Crossing Regions, Shaping Lives: African Migration Corridors in Global Perspective,” will take place from 7 to 12 September 2026 at Koç University in Istanbul, Türkiye, bringing together graduate students, PhD candidates, early-career researchers, policy analysts and practitioners working in migration and forced displacement.
Prof. Setrana’s lecture, titled “Gendered Dynamics of Migration in West Africa: Mobility, Forced Displacement and Social Change,” will examine how migration experiences in West Africa are shaped by gender relations, family structures, labour dynamics and changing social norms.
The lecture will explore the evolving roles of women and men in migration processes, the significance of remittances, gender-specific vulnerabilities within irregular migration and forced displacement contexts, as well as the implications of gendered migration patterns for migration governance and policy development in West Africa.
Prof. Setrana is a Professor of Migration and Social Change and a leading scholar in migration and forced displacement research. Through her work as the IDRC Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa, she leads efforts to advance evidence-based research, policy engagement and capacity development on displacement issues across the region.
Her research focuses on migration governance, forced displacement, gender and labour migration, return migration and reintegration, and climate-related (im)mobilities. She has led and contributed to several international research and policy initiatives supported by organisations including the European Union, UK Research and Innovation, the International Organisation for Migration, GIZ and United Nations agencies.
The lecture will be delivered online on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. GMT.
