Prof. George Owusu

Professor George Owusu obtained Ph.D. in (Geography) in 2005 at the Department of Geography, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. 1999 MPhil in Social Change, Department of Geography, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. He is the Dean, School of Social Sciences, University of Ghana, Legon. George has supervised over 20 Ph.D. students as Principal or Co-Supervisor and examined over 30 Ph.D. theses from universities in Ghana, Australia, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Over 45 successfully supervised MA/MPhil theses.

Professor Owusu’s research interests are urbanization and urban planning, regional development and planning, small and medium-sized urban centers, decentralization and local government, urban/peri-urban land tenure and land administration, landfill and waste management, urban youth, enterprises and employment and urban Crime and violence. His ongoing research activities include:

  • 2018-2022 Mobility and Sociality in Africa’s Emerging Urban with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) involving 5 African universities: the University of Ghana, University of Cape Town, Wits University, University of Nairobi, and University of Zimbabwe (Principal Investigator, Ghana component).
  • 2018-2022 Bosch Pan African College on Sustainable Cities funding from Robert Bosch Stiftung involving 4 African universities: the University of Ghana, University of Cape Town, Wits University, and University of Nairobi (Principal Investigator, Ghana component).
  • 2019-2024 Making Africa Urban (MAU): The Transcalar Politics of Urban Development funded by EU (Co-Investigator).
